Comparing Two Major Programming Contests: IOI vs. ICPC

Abstract
The International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) and the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) are two of the most esteemed competitions in the world of competitive programming, each serving distinct educational and developmental purposes. This article provides a comprehensive comparison of the IOI and the ICPC, highlighting their structural differences, target demographics, and problem-solving approaches. The IOI focuses on individual performance among high school students, fostering innovation and creativity, while the ICPC emphasizes teamwork and collaboration among university students. Through an analysis of competition formats and problem types, this study elucidates the strengths and challenges inherent in both competitions. Ultimately, we aim to demonstrate how the IOI and the ICPC contribute to jointly advancing computational thinking and programming expertise, shaping the next generation of technology leaders and problem solvers.
