Abstract

The panelists, all competitive programming team coaches and college educators, share their experiences teaching and working with competitive programming students and teams. Using the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) as the primary model, the panel also describes other formats and resources, including activities for K–12 learners. We compare competitive programming courses and different ways of incorporating computing-course components into them. We discuss the benefits of participation for students with varied backgrounds, interests, aptitudes, and motivations, as well as benefits to industry and academia through development of a well-prepared workforce. We conclude with best practices and practical suggestions for integrating existing tools and materials into courses and extracurricular activities.
